Salsa Salt Flat carbon flat bar review

Salsa Salt Flat

The signature 11-degree Salsa sweep, consistent and confidence inspiring.

What is it

Salsa comes flying back into the carbon bar arena with the new Salt Flat. Designed for a broad range of uses, the Salt Flat comes in trimmable 750mm and 800mm options with 11-degree back sweep and 6-degree upsweep.

Pros
  • Neutral color matches most bikes
  • Light at 189 grams (750mm width)
  • Graduated bar ends marked for easy trimming
  • 140mm width for use with Salsa Anything Cradle and aero-bars for extreme distance riding
Cons
  • 11-degree back sweep can require some reach-fit changes
  • Can be twangy in roots and rocky sections of trail
Mtbr’s Take

Handlebars are one of the most personal pieces of equipment on a mountain bike. They affect steering, reaction time, and rider confidence. Picking the right one is crucial and could be a costly mistake if you overlook subtle differences.

Salsa Salt Flat

The rider’s view of the Salsa Salt Flat carbon bar.

Salsa is known as an adventurous brand, making bikes and gear best enjoyed deep in the woods or way off the grid. That sentiment comes through loud and clear with the new Salsa Salt Flat bar. Unlike conventional carbon flat bars, the Salt Flat is designed not only for singletrack, but also touring and exploration. The shape of the bar lets you know this, with its more extended section from the stem that covers 140mm, allowing on-bar accessories and even touring bar ends. The silhouette of the Salt Flat is consistent, without sharp bends or tweaks. And the updated graphics package that coincides with Salsa’s new stem and alloy component line are top-notch.

Salsa Salt Flat

750mm is a lot of bar but you can trim it down no problem.

The 750mm width is more than I usually ride with, but I decided to install these test bars on a Fezzari Cascade Peak, which is more playful than my race bike. The width took some getting used to, but after I adjusted, I could tell it helped my steering and gave me confidence in the roots and off the drops. The 11 degrees of sweep also took some time to get used to. I even went as far as changing my stem length from 80 to 90mm to accommodate the reach change.

I later switched back to my 80mm stem and embraced the adjusted position. After some longer rides I could tell it wasn’t the position that changed, but the way the bike drove in and out of tight corners. I liked the sweep more on open sections of trail where I could open the throttle and carve big turns. Bombing down double track and hitting features were where the Salt Flat bars really shined. On long pedal heavy sections of fire road my back felt open, shoulders relaxed, and I was able to push hard on the pedals. I attribute this to the 11-degree back sweep and the more casual position it avails.

Salsa Salt Flat

The geometric styling is cool and subdued enough to match most bikes or components.

On long rocky sections and continuous drops, the Salt Flats felt a little twangy, but this could be from the length and my affinity for 720mm bars. Riding to and from trials, the Salt Flats were very comfortable and soak up road vibration. I can see how they would make an excellent option for touring and long distance cross-country exploration.

Bottom line, the Salsa Salt Flat carbon bar is a solid option for those looking to shed some bike weight, and the 11-degree back sweep could help those who experience lower back pain while riding for prolonged periods of time.

Colombia to make Enduro World Series debut

2018 Enduro World Series Round No. 2

The Enduro World Series stays in South America for round No. 2, but this time the dust of the Chilean Andes is replaced by the tropical rainforest of the Colombian mountains. Indeed, Alcaldia de Manizales promises a completely different challenge to the season opener in Lo Barnechea, Chile, last weekend.

Starting with an urban prologue in downtown Manizales on Saturday, the main race will see riders take on seven stages in a single day on short stages through some of the world’s most iconic coffee plantations.

Sitting on the equator, the tropical climate will see the loose, open trails of round No. 1 replaced with damp, dense rainforest on fun, flowing trails. And while the trails may be fun, don’t expect the competition to be anything less than fierce. Mechanicals forced many of the big names out of contention last weekend, including Richie Rude (Yeti/Fox Shox Racing), Adrien Dailly (Lapierre) and Greg Callaghan (Cube Action Team). They’ll all be gunning for the podium as they look to pick up valuable series points.

Reigning champs Cecile Ravanel (Commencal Vallnord Enduro Racing Team) and Sam Hill (Chain Reaction Cycles Mavic) will enter the race series leaders, but will face stiff competition in their respective categories. Dailly and Rude will be out for revenge, and Martin Maes (GT Factory Racing), Robin Wallner (Ibis Cycles Enduro Race Team) and Gusti Wildhaber (Cube Action Team) will all be feeling confident after their second, third and fourth place finishes last weekend.

In the women’s race Ravanel remains the athlete to beat, but strong performances from both Isabeau Courdurier (Intense-Mavic Collective) and Katy Winton (Trek Factory Racing) mean she won’t have room to relax. Bex Baraona (Ibis Cycles Enduro Race Team) put in her best performance to date with a fourth place finish in Chile, proving she has the speed to keep up with the sharp end of the pack.

In the U21 competition Duncan Nason (Yeti/Fox Shox Factory Race Team) and Ella Conolly will be looking to claim the top spot of the podium again, whilst Karim Amour and Melissa Newell will be after the same in the Master’s category.

Chris Ball, Managing Director of the Enduro World Series, said: “I could not be more excited for the series’ first visit to Colombia. The local organization and wider Manizales community have been so supportive and welcoming. We’re in for an incredible race, and it’ll be interesting to see how the athletes handle something so utterly different to the conditions in Chile last week. That’s the beauty of this discipline, every round offers a completely new and unique experience for the riders, which is why the racing is so consistently exciting.”

Video: Jeff Kendall-Weed shreds on the new Ibis Ripmo

Jeff Kendall-Weed

Rock drops and sandy corners are all part of the San Gabriel riding experience.

Ever wonder what it would be like to rip the new Ibis Ripmo around the trails in San Gabriel Mountain range? Jeff Kendall-Weed did, craving fresh test terrain for his new ride. So he traveled back to his boyhood stomping grounds in search of inspiration and escape from the winters of his new Washington state home.

Check out Mtbr’s First Look and First Ride Impressions of the new Ibis Ripmo.

Growing up in the Redwood rainforest of Santa Cruz, California, Kendall-Weed took the soft, black dirt that lined his local trails for granted. On frequent trips to Southern California, he raced within the confines of suburbia. Compared to the beautiful, steep hills of the central coast that he’d come to know and love, it was a serious surrender to travel to SoCal race courses, consisting of trails that seemed underwhelming in comparison. Even worse, while on those race courses in the L.A. basin, through the smog, one could see legitimate mountains soaring above the city.

Near the top of the San Gabriel range.

Fast forward 15 years to the launch of the new Ibis Ripmo. Kendall-Weed knew nothing about the bike, but the snow-covered trails where he called home in western Washington State made it impossible to open up the throttle and fully experience this new ride. But a few friends had recently claimed that trail conditions in these mysterious southern California mountains were really, really good.

Ibis Ripmo

Kendall-Weed’s new Ibis Ripmo in the California sand and not the Washington snow.

Kendall-Weed moved into action, called some friends, explaining he was in need something different for the first few rides on his new bike. John Watson, an L.A. photographer and journalist with a background in architecture and design, was quick to answer. His descriptions of the juxtaposition of downtown Los Angeles in the distance with the rocky and narrow singletrack of the San Gabriel range painted an intriguing picture.

Jeff Kendall-Weed

The trails on and around the San Gabriel Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for Kendall-Weed’s riding style.

A couple short flights later, Kendall-Weed arrived in the heart of the frantic, concrete metropolis known as the City of Angels. At LAX, he met up with Logan Nelson, a friend who he has collaborated in previous video projects and would be handling cinematography for this trip. From the airport they braved the traffic of the interstate to begin their adventure in Simi Valley in search of these mysterious trails and adventure.

To see what happens next you’re gonna have to watch the video and live the adventure for yourself.
