Transition’s Speed Balanced Geometry explained

Transition SBG Chart

There are five key dimensions to the new SBG system. Most companies have figured out the first four, but fork offset will be a new element for many.

In the past five years, mountain bikes have come a long way. We’ve gone through two different wheel sizes, various axle width variations, drivetrains that have gained two extra clicks, and the slow death of the front derailleur.

Bike geometry has also evolved. Each month, we meet another super bike that’s longer, slacker, and lower than its predecessor. These new era geometries inspire confidence at speed, but Transition argues that they suffer at slower speeds and on flatter terrain. The culprit is the front wheel, which sits too far ahead of the rider.

Transition Sentinel Geometry

The new Transition Sentinel, which was teased here, is based around the SBG concept.

To maximize the benefits of these new era trends, Transition believes fork offset needs to change. A shorter fork offset brings the front axle rearward, moving it under the rider. Combined with the shorter stem lengths that are now popular, you gain better front wheel traction.

The entire concept is called Speed Balanced Geometry. It consists of five key dimensions: frame reach, head tube angle, seat tube angle, stem length, and fork offset. Most brands have figured out that longer frames, slacker head angles, steep seat tubes, and shorter stems are better, but now the race is on to figure out fork offset. Press play to learn more.

For Transition, the key to the whole concept is balance. They are trying to better center the rider between both wheels, which will improve front wheel traction, and place them in a more confident riding position.

Cure, Ravanel lead Enduro World Series Round No. 5

Enduro World Series

You leader after day 1, Alexandre Cure. Photo courtesy Enduro World Series

After five tough stages, it was Cecile Ravanel (Commencal Vallnord Enduro Racing Team) and Alexandre Cure (BH Miranda Racing Team) who reigned supreme at the first day of the Natural Games Millau EWS driven by URGE bp.

Enduro World Series

It was that kind of day. Photo courtesy Enduro World Series

Rain once more plagued the series, creating some tough conditions on the steep and technical French terrain. But it proved no match for the home riders who dominated the sharp end of the results sheets. In the men’s race Adrien Dailly (Lapierre) lies second and Theo Galy (Devinci Global Racing) is in third. And both will be chasing hard tomorrow to catch Cure who leads by just five seconds.

Ravanel once again was unbeatable. Photo courtesy Enduro World Series

In the women’s race Isabeau Courdurier (SUNN) won the first stage of the day, but a flat in stage five lost her valuable time and she ended in the day in third. Consistency paid off for Anita Gehrig (Ibis Cycles Enduro Race Team) who finished the day in second. However, given Ravanel’s commanding 1:18.02 lead, it’s going to be hard for anyone to best the reigning World Champion tomorrow.

In the Master’s Frenchman Karim Amour won all five stages and has a commanding lead heading into day two, whilst in the Master’s Women the USA’s Mary McConneloug is out front. It’s French riders again who dominate the U21 categories – with Estelle Charles and Theotim Trabac leading.

OneUp EDC Tool System review

OneUp EDC Tool 100cc Pump

The EDC Tool stashes a multi tool, chain breaker, spoke tool, and C02 cartridge.

What is it

The OneUp EDC Tool is an integrated tool solution that stores a multi tool (2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8mm, T25), chain breaker, spoke key (1,2,3), and tire lever in a compact package. It’s designed to be stored within your steerer tube or a new high volume pump. The pump is available in 70cc or 100cc variations. It features a quick connect Presta only head. When removed from the pump, the head doubles as a C02 inflator.

Pros
  • Innovative tool integration
  • Every tool you need
  • It just works
Cons
  • Presta only pump head

Mtbr’s Take

The EDC Tool is a highly innovative multi tool/storage solution. To use the phrase ingenious would be selling it short. Where most manufacturers struggle to fit the basic necessities, OneUp has squeezed in every tool you’d want to carry, plus a few extra. They did all this in a package the size of an ordinary mini pump. It’s remarkable not only because of the convenience and packaging, but because it’s their first crack at a multi tool.

OneUp EDC Tool 100cc Pump

OneUp EDC Tools, including the optional C02 head.

The system itself is easy to use. Install and reinstall are simple, and all components snap together with a satisfying click. The multi tool is on the smaller side, but features every common bit you’ll need for most trailside repairs.

OneUp EDC Tool 100cc Pump

The 5mm and flathead lock together to form an 8mm.

They’ve even managed to fit an 8mm hex. OneUp accomplished this by using a 5mm bolt that interlocks with the flat head/quick link breaker. A demo on how that tool works is available here. When set together, these tools have the same diameter as an 8mm, meaning you can pull pedals.

OneUp EDC Tool 100cc Pump

A chain/spoke tool is attached to the tire lever via an Allen. You can remove the spoke wrench to work on your wheel or rotate it for use on a chain.

The other piece of the EDC is the chain breaker/spoke tool. It’s attached to the tire lever. You can remove the tool entirely to true a wheel or simply rotate it to work on your chain. Having the chain tool mounted on the lever is a nice touch, because it’s easier to use than some of the lighter options we’ve tested. The tire lever is on the small side, but it’s solid and will work in a pinch. However, if you know your tire/rim combo are tight, it’s worth carrying an extra lever.

OneUp EDC Tool 100cc Pump

The tool fits inside either a steerer tube or OneUp’s new bike pump.

This entire package fits inside your fork steerer tube or OneUp’s new 70cc EDC Pump. If you opt for the larger 100cc pump like we did, you can squeeze in a few more tools. There are threads on the bottom of the EDC which allow you to mount a sealed storage capsule. It’s just large enough to store some rolled up zip ties, patch kit, or “safety supplies.” If that’s not your thing, you can remove the capsule and replace it with up to a 20g C02 cartridge. The head of the pump doubles as a C02 inflator, so you don’t have to pack anything extra.

Click here to view the embedded video.

So what’s the catch? So far, I haven’t found one. It all just works and the price is reasonable. OneUp charges $ 59 for the EDC Tool. If you want to store it in your headtube, you’ll need to shell out another $ 25 and hope your bike shop carries the EDC Tap ($ 35). If you’re happy with the pump mounted solution, you’re out either $ 55 or $ 59 depending on what pump you choose. Those prices are on the higher end for either a multi tool or pump, but they’re not crazy, especially when you consider the quality of the product.

I’ve only had the product a few days, so I can’t speak to long-term durability. But considering the engineering team is based out of British Columbia, a region famous for its muddy winters, I’ll give these guys the benefit of the doubt. Aside from that small question mark, I have no hesitation recommending the EDC Tool. This will be a hard act to follow. I can’t wait to see what other competitors respond with.

Enduro World Series heads home to France

Enduro World Series Round No. 5

The Enduro World Series heads to its spiritual home of France this week for round No. 5, the Natural Games Millau EWS driven by URGE bp. Part of the Natural Games, EWS riders will be immersed in this celebration of sport and music that also features climbing, parkour, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and paragliding. Now in its 10th year, the Natural Games is Europe’s largest outdoor event, attracting crowds of 100,000 over four days.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM7io1ozPKQ

This two day enduro race will feature nine stages across 88km, with a huge 4200 meters of total descending. Taking place on trails typical of the Aveyron region in southern France, competitors will be up against a mixture of loamy and rocky trails, some of which are intimidatingly steep.

“This is the first time the EWS has visited Millau and the trails are incredible,” said Chris Ball, managing director of the Enduro World Series. “It’s also the first time the series has been part of such a huge festival and it’s great to see mountain biking sitting alongside other sports like climbing and kayaking. Our French rounds always deliver really exciting racing and I’m sure Millau will too, especially with such a tight points race on our hands as head into the last half of the season.”

As the series enters the last half of the season, the stakes couldn’t be higher. In the men’s competition the race for series points is the tightest it has ever been with just 20 points separating series leader Greg Callaghan (Cube Action Team) and second placed Sam Hill (Chain Reaction Cycles Mavic). Adrien Dailly (Lapierre) sits 40 points behind Hill in third place, and with two EWS wins already this year, including at the last round in Ireland, the Frenchman is the hot favorite to take the win on home soil.

In the women’s race Cecile Ravanel (Commencal Vallnord Enduro Team) leads the standings and will be looking for another victory in front of her home crowd. But trying their best to stop her will be second place Ines Thoma (Canyon Factory Enduro Team) and third placed Katy Winton (Trek Factory Racing Enduro Team). With just 30 points between them these two will be battling hard this weekend. Isabeau Courdurier (SUNN) is also an ever present threat. She’s the only rider to beat Ravanel this season and will also be hoping to put on a show for her French fans.

Enduro World Series Round No. 5

Two-time defending champ Richie Rude is looking to get back in the hunt for the overall. Photo courtesy Enduro World Series

It’s another French rider that leads out the Master’s category. Karim Amour (BH Miranda Racing Team) has won all four races this season. Chasing him down will be Nigel Page of Chain Reaction Cycles-Mavic and reigning series champion Michael Broderick. In the Master’s Women, Mary Mcconnelloug is leading the charge.

Killian Callaghan is out front in the U21 Men, but faces stiff competition in the form of Daniel Self and Nathan Secondi. Over in the U21 Women Martha Gill commands an impressive points lead, but Estelle Charles of France beat her at the last round so expect to see a fierce race from these two.

In the team race strong performances from the Gehrig twins and Robin Wallner mean it’s Ibis Cycles Enduro Race Team out front, but they can’t afford to relax with second and third placed Canyon Factory Enduro Team and Rocky Mountain URGE bp not far behind.

More Information about this weekend’s race can be found here. To follow live timing, Quarq GPS tracking and the race feed to be sure to check in to the EWS live page on Friday and Saturday.
