To enjoy yourself outside during the winter, you need to layer. By now, most of us have our base layer/jersey/outer game down. But often our faces still suffer. Enter the Weatherneck system.
Created by Brian Davis, the mind behind Fix it Sticks, this modular Balaclava consists of two pieces. The first part is a mullet hat that keeps the top of your head and back of your neck warm. The second is a ventilated face mask that’s held in place via magnets. As you warm up, the mask can be removed and stashed in a pocket.
This design is a improvement over the original Weatherneck, which launched last winter. While this design is backwards compatible, consider upgrading because of the new magnetic attachment, steel tabs to simplify hat re-sizing, hat that covers the neck and ears, higher airflow mesh that reduces fogging, and the mask itself, which is now 2” longer.
The entire Weatherneck system is currently available on Kickstarter for $ 35. The project is fully backed and Davis expects orders to ship before Christmas. If you want to order just the face mask or mullet hat, expect to pledge $ 20 and $ 25 respectively. Sound expensive? Remember, these products are manufactured in the United States.
