In sports there is always a singular character who is so dominating that the rest of the field is basically competing for second place. In motocross, Ricky Carmichael’s commitment to fitness revolutionized the sport.

In the mountain bike world, there are a number of athletes who have helped shape the sport, but one name in particular stands out. Anne-Caroline Chausson is bar none the greatest mountain bike racer of all time. Over the span of her lengthy career, she won 19 World Championship titles in a variety of disciplines, and one Olympic gold medal. The Frenchwoman’s talents inspired a generation of racers.

Last year, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which forced her to drop out of the Enduro World Series to fight for her life. But just a year later, she was back on her bike competing.
