Answer showcased a number of new products at Sea Otter this year, but their super wide Protaper Alloy handlebars are what caught Mtbr’s eye. Sure other companies make a bar wider than 800mm, but do they make an 810mm bar with a 3” rise at 31.8 clamp diameter? These things are massive and feel solid. Just what the doctor ordered for downhill junkies in need of a taller bar for a proper fit.
The Protaper Alloy ($ 66) is available in 810mm and 750mm and weighs 335g to 290g depending on rise. Made of 7050 alloy and featuring tapered internal and external walls, Answer was able to maintain strength while reducing weight. With stats like this do you really need to step up to a 35mm bar? The Protaper Alloy is available in four color combinations, though options may vary depending on length choice.
Answer also offers the Protaper in carbon form with lengths of 810mm, 750mm, and 720mm but rise is limited. The Protaper Carbon ($ 150) weighs 215g, 200g and 180g respectively and is available in black only.
Answer also showed off their Rove R2 pedal, which is similar to the Rove FR but with more pin options and lower weight. Answer ran finite element analysis on the original FR design and were able to remove 40g from the pedal set, while maintaining deck profile and durability. Designed for downhill and freeride applications the set weighs 427g. Optional box steel shark tooth deck pins are included in the box. The shark tooth pins are harder and sharper. They also feature serrated edges at the top of the pin to push grip to insane levels, especially in wet conditions. Available colors include Red, Blue, Red Mist, Black and White.
Other features include cartridge bearings, stainless bushings, a DU axle, and 10×10 hex head studs. Price is $ 115.
