Maxxis just keeps cranking out the hits, and right now the emphasis is on Wide Trail, that perfect tire size that blends the low rolling resistance of “normal” size rubber with the tank-like traction that comes with a little extra girth. Here’s PR man extraordinaire Bobby Brown breaking it all down.

The latest additions to the Maxxis Wide Trail family include new Rekon 2.4 and 2.6. Initially this superb all-around tire was only available in plus sizes. But reception was so enthusiastic, Maxxis will soon be offering it in everything from XC widths to those new WT versions. “It’s one of our most popular tires and it works really well in a huge variety of terrain,” explained marketing specialist Bobby Brown of the new WT tires that are optimized for 30mm-35mm inner rim widths.
Also new from Maxxis is a 27.5×2.6 version of the Ardent Race, which has slightly taller knobs than its narrower counterparts, but remains a standout high volume XC-oriented tire. Other exciting debuts include a 29×2.6 Forekaster, which is the brand’s second 29×2.6 tire (after the Rekon). There are also 2.5 versions of the High Roller II and Aggressor on the way, both which come with either EXO or Double Down puncture protection. Finally, and perhaps most exciting of all, is the upcoming kid’s version of the Minion trail tire. This 24×2.4 is tubeless ready with 120tpi, helping keep weight low for all the mini-shredders out there.

Wide cupped knobs down the middle provide excellent braking on the sloppiest singletrack. When the leaves start falling and the weather becomes more unpredictable, the Forekaster is the late-season tire of choice.
