This is not a shred video in an exotic location. Rather it is a profile on a lifestyle where mountain bike balance is achieved. Many of us are caught in harsh commutes, skyrocketing expenses and little time to enjoy what we truly love. Lanie White in Helena, Montana seems to have achieved what many of us long for.

Helena, MT local Lanie White finds both freedom and empowerment in mountain biking, and through her job at Prickly Pear Land Trust, she works to ensure the opportunity and experience is available for everyone. Every mountain bike community has its individuals who are constantly striving to progress the sport. Be it trail building, advocacy, land management or retail, every avenue is an equally important part of creating a thriving movement. Montana Treasures is a series about a few of the many people who embody the state’s greater mountain bike scene through their actions and endeavors.
Many of her thoughts and words resonate with us mountain bikers as we find the magic of mountain biking in a busy, sometimes hostile areas.
She says, “When you have a wonderful organization in town, you don’t see the stripping of recreation and public access that you see happening all around.” In Helena, recreation is not seen as a luxury or a crime but a fundamental and essential part of life and well-being.
On her love for mountain biking:
“I started to fall in love with mountain biking when I realized just how much it did for me. It’s a wonderful, emotional catharsis, is the same as playing a piece of music that you really love.
On working with other mountain bikers:
“Experiencing what it feels like to work together and help each other to reach a goal. I was horrified at first. fitness, mental stamina, emotional health, sheer joy and it is something that serves me in biking and other parts of your life.”
We all try to achieve a healthy and fulfilling work-life balance and we celebrate the ones who find it like Lanie White.
