Fanny packs will never be cool for strutting down the Champs-Élysées, but the bum bag has definitely made a comeback in the mountain bike world.
Indeed, the combination of enduro racing, frames that don’t accommodate water bottles, and a general disdain for sweaty backs has reinvigorated this once dead product category. Earlier this year, CamelBak launched the Palos 4LR waist pack (which we rated 4 out of 5 stars), and now EVOC is set to start shipping the Hip Pack Race, a 3-liter pack that can accommodate a 1-liter bladder.
Cut-outs reduce the contact area to the lower back to enable cooling air circulation.
Top line features of the EVOC Hip Pack Race include a bladder compartment that’s big enough to carry a rain jacket as well, and it has an exterior water bottle holder, and a tool pouch with various zippered pockets that are ideal for stashing keys and other small valuables.
Plenty of room to carry all the essentials.
EVOC has also taken the air flow contact back system from its hydration packs and incorporated onto this hip pack, where cut-outs reduce the contact area to the lower back to enable cooling air circulation.
It also has wide, ventilated hip flippers that help the pack stay in place even on rough trails. The Venti Flap system can be adjusted to regulate the distance to the back, thereby providing additional ventilation in the contact area when climbing. When it’s time to go downhill, pull the strap tight and the hip back is securely fastened.
There are zippered exterior pockets for additional storage.
The pack also has two exterior zipped pockets, which are great for stashing snacks or you’ll smartphone for on-the-fly picture taking. The bladder hose crosses the front of your waist and attaches via a magnetic clip. Color options include black, red/neon blue, and olive/light petrol.
